People in Jesus' life – Who did Jesus surround Himself with?
The first people in Jesus’ life who influenced Him were His family. Joseph (Jesus’ father) was a carpenter, making their family a part of the middle class. Mary (Jesus’ mother) was a teenager who was “promised” by her parents to be married to Joseph (at the time when Jesus was considered to be miraculously conceived). Following their marriage, and Jesus’ birth, Mary and Joseph had other children as well. People in Jesus' life – The Disciples The disciples were major people in Jesus’ life. The word “disciple” refers to a learner or follower. While Jesus was on earth, He chose twelve followers to be disciples. They learned from Jesus and were trained by Him. “He called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every disease and sickness. These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him” (Matthew 10:1-4). Were these twelve men extraordinary? No, they were ordinary men whom God used in an extraordinary way. Acts 4:13 says, “When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.” Jesus' Life - Learn More! |
