The Names of Jesus – Do Jesus’ names prove that He claimed to be God?

What do the names of Jesus mean? Did He claim to be God? Jesus' most controversial act was that He repeatedly claimed to be God, which was a direct violation of the Jewish law. Here are some examples:
  • I and the Father are one - “My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father's hand. I and the Father are one" (John 10:30).

  • Alpha and Omega, Eternal, Almighty: "’I am the Alpha and the Omega,’ says the Lord God, ‘who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty’" (Revelation 1:8)

  • I Am, which the Jewish understood as a claim to be God: “'I tell you the truth,’ Jesus answered, ‘before Abraham was born, I am!’" (John 8:58).

The Names of Jesus – Do the names that others called Jesus indicate deity?
  • Lord of All: “You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, telling the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all” (Acts 10:36).

  • True God: “We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true—even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life” (1 John 5:20).

  • My Lord and My God: “A week later his [Jesus] disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you!’ Then he said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.’ Thomas said to him, ‘My Lord and my God!’” (John 20:26-28).

  • Judge of sin: “In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom…” (2 Timothy 4:1).

  • God and Savior: “…while we wait for the blessed hope—the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good” (Titus 2:13).
