Food for thought
Hi! I think it`s becasue he wants them to be fully aware of the task realise how difficult that is - almost impossible and so make them all the more aware of the miracle he`s about to perform. ``Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread, and give them something to eat?`` He said to them, ``How many loaves do you have? Go see.`` I take these words to mean also that we have to see what we have ''and be grateful to God'' rather than look at what we don`t. And we have to build on that or be satisfied with it. What tou you think?

why is it difficult to do what Jesus did in years ago while we belief in Jesus?
there are many popes following footsteps of St. Peter the Apostle but they did not perform any miracle to help the whole world from the sins satan thrust upon people.

The challenge
He made this challenge may be the reason that the disciples are with him in many days teaching them everything and witness of many miracles He did. Jesus challenge them to test them thier faith on Him and how they acted. We Christian are disciples with Christ this challenge can give us also example to us, when troubles and testing comes and how we response and handle the problem. as the saying goes ``no pain no gain`` so faith grows through testing.

Jesus challenged the disciples
This was really a challenging response from Jesus towards the disciples. First, they take it in a worldly way by asking Jesus ``Shall we go and buy for two hundred denarii .....``. Jesus replied by asking ``How many loaves do you have?``. Jesus challenged them to find out from among themselves. Jesus taught us from this passage that we have to bring out whatever we have and submit it to Jesus. Then Jesus will take care of the problem. Here, the disciples taken this, as a challenge saw the miracle. They all ate and satisfied. The mighty name of Jesus also glorified.

Why did Jesus challenge the disciples to "give them (5000 people) something to eat" before multiplying the food?

Why did Jesus challenge the disciples to give them (5000 people) something to eat before multiplying the food?
It was to show the disciples that in any critical situation, if you just listen to Jesus everything will work out fine.

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

The apostles gathered themselves together to Jesus, and they told him all things, whatever they had done, and whatever they had taught. He said to them, "You come apart into a deserted place, and rest awhile." For there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat. They went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves. They saw them going, and many recognized him and ran there on foot from all the cities. They arrived before them and came together to him. Jesus came out, saw a great multitude, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd, and he began to teach them many things. When it was late in the day, his disciples came to him, and said, "This place is deserted, and it is late in the day. Send them away, that they may go into the surrounding country and villages, and buy themselves bread, for they have nothing to eat."
But he answered them, "You give them something to eat."
They asked him, "Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread, and give them something to eat?"
He said to them, "How many loaves do you have? Go see."
When they knew, they said, "Five, and two fish."
He commanded them that everyone should sit down in groups on the green grass. They sat down in ranks, by hundreds and by fifties. He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed and broke the loaves, and he gave to his disciples to set before them, and he divided the two fish among them all. They all ate, and were filled. They took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and also of the fish. Those who ate the loaves were five thousand men.
