Why did Jesus tell the rich man to sell all his possessions before coming to follow Him?
This was so because even though the rich man observed the commandments, he was not perfect in the eyes of God. The rich man `s prea was of wrong motive becasuse he was not puting God first in his possetions. Jesus was trying to teach the Rich man to love but the rich man thougt that it was not possible to keep his treasures in heaven by assisting the poor. What is impossible with man to God it is posible. Therefore, we need to put God first and store our riches in heaven and all other things will be added to us. Mathew 6 Vs 33. If we follow the teaching of Jesus we glorify His name. It is only when our heart is hard to accept Jesus that it will be difficult for us to enter into the kingdom of God. Receive Jesus and give Him your tresaure to have the assurance of entering into the kingdom of God.

Why did Jesus tell the rich man to sell all his possessions before coming to follow Him?
Jesus needed to teach a great lesson about storing treasures in heaven. The fact that the rich man went away sad, clearly indicates that he was obsessed with his worldly belongings. obsession is an obstacle to any good intention. The rich man had abided by all the Mosaic laws, but missed the law of Jesus-to love one another. Jesus took this great opportunity to teach even the disciples that- no one is good, except only God. He even taught that -with man it was impossible, but with God, nothing is impossible.Jesus took this opportunity to assure the disciples who had left everything inorder to follow Jesus, that they would sit on thrones and judge the tribes of israel. Jesus also loved the rich man so much, that is why he went a step further to underscore to him the mysteries of storing riches in heaven. In short, the worldly wealth that the rich man was so obsessed with, was no ticket at all to inherit eternal life.

I see many rich followers of Christ today. Does this teaching encourage followers of Christ to be poor? Are the poor better of as followers of Christ?

Can anyone elaborate on the following. I got it from Wikepedia. Another common explanation of the figure, first recorded by Theophylact of Bulgaria in the eleventh century,[citation needed] was that Jesus was referring to a certain gate in Jerusalem c

Why did Jesus tell the rich man to sell all his possessions before coming to follow Him?
We as sinners, have to repent our sins, come clean, give up the old life, part from the things that we regard as important but has no place with Jesus and accept Jesus as the ruling authority and love in our lifes. Only then will we be able to focus on Him and His purpose for our lifes. The rich man, as all of us, needed to learn this lesson to understand that we can only serve one God, nothing else, nothing less.

Why did Jesus tell the rich man to sell all his possessions before coming to follow Him?
Jesus was drawing out what the man treasured in his heart, which was wealth and security in possessions. He was ultimately not loving His God as first.

Why rich people seldom have second thoughts giving their possessions to the poor? Ar they frightened that they might lose everything they have? Or just wanted to keep all their necessities for themselves?

The Rich Young Man

Behold, one came to him and said, "Good teacher, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?"
He said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good but one, that is, God. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments."
He said to him, "Which ones?"
Jesus said, "'You shall not murder.' 'You shall not commit adultery.' 'You shall not steal.' 'You shall not offer false testimony.' 'Honor your father and mother.' And, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'"
The young man said to him, "All these things I have observed from my youth. What do I still lack?"
Jesus said to him, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me." But when the young man heard the saying, he went away sad, for he was one who had great possessions. Jesus said to his disciples, "Most certainly I say to you, a rich man will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven with difficulty. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a rich man to enter into the Kingdom of God."
When the disciples heard it, they were exceedingly astonished, saying, "Who then can be saved?"
Looking at them, Jesus said, "With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."
Then Peter answered, "Behold, we have left everything, and followed you. What then will we have?"
Jesus said to them, "Most certainly I tell you that you who have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of Man will sit on the throne of his glory, you also will sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. Everyone who has left houses, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, will receive one hundred times, and will inherit eternal life. But many will be last who are first; and first who are last.
