"Authority" of Jesus
Another thought concerning the questioning of Jesus' authority, is that some rabbis (teachers) at Jesus' time were simply "Torah teachers", meaning they only had the "authority" to teach the "common Torah understanding" of the community.  Those rabbis generally lived in one community and taught from the local synagogue.  There was another "class" of rabbis, those with "sm'kha", (authority), to teach Torah as it was revealed to them from God.  Jesus was a sm'kha rabbi, and these rabbis generally traveled, had disciples (talmidim) and were held in he highest standing.  Jesus demonstrated his sm'kha when in his teachings, he would begin by saying, "you have heard it said......., but I say........".  He was presenting his "yoke", his teaching.  In Matt 11:29, when he say "take my yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart....", he was teaching "different torah interpretation", and obviously the Chief Priests were at least "initially" interested in who Jesus was, and then became threatened as Jesus would soon oppose the way the temple and sacrificial systems were being forced upon the people.

Why Jesus answered a question with a question
Rabbinic dialogue frequently was composed of answering questions with questions, as oftentimes, "the answer to the question was a question"!  Jesus often employed a technique known as "the third way", where he refused to "play" by the pharisees groundrules, and thereby, turned the tables on them.

Why did Jesus answer a question with a question, rather than just telling the Pharisees by what authority He acted?
He did because he knew the power brain of the Pharises behind the question and Jesus did not want mere men of books to tempt his intergrity.

The Pharrisses did not believe that Jesus was who He said He was so that made Him asked the way He did.

Why did Jesus answer a question with a question, rather than just telling the Pharisees by what authority He acted?
Jesus knew what the Pharisees wanted to know and He wanted them to undestand Him better. Jesus was wondering as to why the Pharisees could not understand His authority and even the baptism of John the baptist. In other ways, Jesus wanted the Pharisees to reason for themselves with the authority of Jesus. Brothers and Sisters , Jesus has authority over everything and He is urging us to reason with Him in Prayer. Jesus acted by the authority from above ''heaven'' because all authority in heaven and on earth is been given to him.In other ways , Jesus acted on His authority.

For a good teacher wants his disciples not to follow blindly but understanding. Free will is based on willingness to know and not steer one`s course through life blindfoldedly. He has them to reflect on Johhn` recognition his lepaing in the womb. he Baptised with the matter announcing the Baptism with the Holy Spirit, which ''theologically i may very well make a huge mistake here so sorry'', one cant help feeling Jesus gave to him when still in the womb of Elisabeth. Mary was filled with the Holy Spirit and John who was a tiny life developing in his mother`s womb...was it the birth of his soul? The Light shone through the temple. Mary, and showered John with his rays. No one knew that Mary was grwoing the Lord inside her womb...John did - the Word for the little ones..who smaller than a still growing in the womb baby...The last prophet and as Jes they should have been able to tracve back all the prophecy treasured from the OT.

Hi everyone, You see Pharisees knew the truth but their hearts were simply evil. All along they were wondering how Jesus was performing incredible miracles and then to them thought of leadership that if we let him continue like this, his going to gain reputation from the crowd. So here they are asking Jesus by what authority and Jesus also answers them by which authority b`se he knew that they arleady knew the answer but they were hidding it that`s they knew the truth but instead they hidden the truth to evil

Why did Jesus answer a question with a question, rather than just telling the Pharisees by what authority He acted?
He wanted to see if the Pharisees knew what he was asking, but they didn`t want to answer the right question because they didn`t want to have to answer the right way.

The Authority of Jesus Questioned

When he had come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said, "By what authority do you do these things? Who gave you this authority?"
Jesus answered them, "I also will ask you one question, which if you tell me, I likewise will tell you by what authority I do these things. The baptism of John, where was it from? From heaven or from men?"
They reasoned with themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will ask us, 'Why then did you not believe him?' But if we say, 'From men,' we fear the multitude, for all hold John as a prophet." They answered Jesus, and said, "We don't know."
He also said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.
