Who is Jesus?
1. Who is Jesus? Answers to the question of who Jesus is seem almost inexhaustive but we will attempt to answer this question, at least in part, by looking at the Bible, beginning with some claims and comments Jesus made about Himself. To narrow our category still more, let's begin just in the Gospel of John. What Jesus said of Himself in John's Gospel: ''To Nicodemus the Pharisee'' ?For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life? ''John 3:16''. ''To the Samaritan woman at the well'' ?,Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst,? ''John 4:12:14a''. ?,the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do, for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner,I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me? ''John 5:19,30''. ?,the works which the Father has given me to finish¨the very works that I do¨bear witness of Me, that the Father has sent Me? ''John 5:36''. ?I have come in my Father's name,? ''John 6:43a''. ?For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world,I am the bread of life. He ho comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst? ''John 6:33,35''. ?,I am the bread which came down from heaven,I am the bread of life,I am the living bread which comes down from heaven? ''John 6:41b,48,51a''. ?,My doctrine is not mine, but His who sent me? ''John 7:16'' ?For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me? ''John 6:38''. ?,I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life? ''John 8:12''. ?I am One who bears witness of Myself, and the Father who sent Me bears witness of Me? ''John 8:18''. ?,I am from above,? ''John 8:23''. ?,nor have I come of Myself, but He sent me? ''John 8:42b''. ?,I do not have a demon, but I honor my Father,I do not seek my own glory? ''John 8:49,50''. ?,Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM? ''John 8:58''. ?,I am the light of the world? ''John 9:5''. ?I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness? ''John 12:46''. ?I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture? ''John 10:9''. ?I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep? ''John 10:11''. ?I am the good shepherd, and I know My sheep, and am known by My own. As the Father knows me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep? ''John 10:14, 15''. ?,I lay down My life that I may take it again? ''John 10:17b''. ?I and the Father are one? ''John 10:30''. ?,I am the resurrection and the life, He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live? ''John 11:25''. ?,I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself? ''John 12:32''. ?He who believes in Me, believes not in Me but in Him who sent Me. He who sees Me sees Him who sent Me? ''John 12:44, 45''. ?,I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words , has that which judges him¨the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day. ?For I have not spoken on my own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak? ''John 12:48 - 50''. ?You call me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am? ''John 13:13''. ?For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you? ''John 13:15''. ?I am the way, the truth and the life. No-one comes to the Father except through me? ''John 14:6''. ?,I am in the Father and the Father in Me,? ''John 14:11''. ?I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser? ''John 15:1''. ?I came forth from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father? ''John 16:28 ? prophesying of His death''. ?,the Father is with Me? ''John 16:32b''. ?,I have overcome the world? ''John 16:33b''. ?,I am not of the world? ''John 17:16b''. ?,You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth,? ''John 18:37''. Therefore, Jesus is: the Word of God ''John 1'', giver of eternal life, Savior, living water, replica and express image of the Father, truth, life, light, righteous judge, witness of God, executer of God's will, from above, bearing Father's name, I AM, oneness with the Father, teacher and Lord, the door, the good shepherd, the vine, , mediator between God and man, overcomer of the world, not of the world, king, the way to the Father. What others said of Jesus in John's Gospel: John the Baptist, Jesus' cousin, said of Jesus: ?,his was He of whom I said He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No-one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him? ''John 1:15-18''. ?,Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world? ''John 1:29''. ?And I have seen Him and testified that this is he Son of God? ''John 1:24''. The Samaritan woman says of Jesus: ?,Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet? ''John 4:19''. The Samaritans the woman spoke to said of Jesus: ?,Now we believe, not because of what you said, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world? ''John 4:42''. What Jesus said of himself in the synoptic Gospels: ?Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn of Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls? ''Matthew 11:28, 29''.

Where is the body of Jesus now?

The body of Jesus cannot be found on earth because it was resurrected and He is now in Heaven with a resurrected body. The New Testament Bible clearly shows that no one will ever find the body or the bones of Jesus on earth.

Jesus said He is the resurrection and the life, according to the Gospel of John chapter 11, verse 35 in the New Testament Bible.

According to the Bible Christians together form the “body of Christ.” Jesus was the Christ so this is relevant to understand where His body is now. In other words, His physical body has been resurrected and is in Heaven in a resurrected state. But His Spirit lives on through the body of believers on earth who have invited Him to be their savior.

This concept can be verified throughout the Bible. Here are some key verses from the Bible on the idea of Jesus’s followers making up the body of Christ today.
See Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12 and Ephesians 4)

Did Jesus work to earn money?
The Bible does not tell whether or not Jesus specifically worked to earn money. We do know that He followed His adopted father, Joesph’s, trade and was a carpenter. Therefore, at that time, He probably earned money.  It is likely then that He worked at different times as a carpenter to earn money.

He did not preach, heal or minister to earn money. There is nothing in the Bible to suggest this.

We know that Jesus trusted His heavenly Father to provide His needs. We do not know specifically if that included working at times once He had entered His full-time ministry.

Why did Jesus die?
The Bible shows that Jesus lived in the home of his parents in Nazareth, in Israel when he was young. When Jesus was a man, however, the New Testament Bible teaches us that He had no fixed home since he traveled around preaching, teaching and healing.

"Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head." (Luke 9:58 in the New Testament Bible, NKJV) .

But as a child, and probably as a young man, Jesus’s home was with his mother and adoptive father in Nazareth. This is seen in both the New Testament which historicizes and recounts Jesus’ life, but also in the Old Testament Bible which points to the coming Messiah and shows where He would live.

The New Testament Bible depicts Jesus as an adult traveling, teaching, preaching, healing and ministering and shows that He had no set place to lay His head. His travels took him to the countries and towns surrounding Jerusalem, including Samaria, Jordan, Perea, Caperneum. Click here for more details:

What food did Jesus eat?

While we don’t know all the foods Jesus ate, we know He ate as an ordinary person of His day and His culture. He ate fish, bread, lamb, drank wine and His meals would have included the typical spices of that culture. He enjoyed the cooking of His friends Mary and Martha. He ate with Matthew the tax collector and seemed to enjoy fine food. He probably ate the same way as anyone else at that time in that country.

The Bible shows that Jesus was not a vegetarian. He ate fish with His disciples on several occasions. We see this in the Gospel of John chapter 21 when He cooked and ate fish again with His disciples after He was resurrected from the dead. He would have likely eaten lamb at the Passover supper. He ate an ordinary diet the same as the average person in His country and of that era.

Did Jesus wear a beard?

The Bible does not disclose whether or not Jesus had a beard. It does state that He was very ordinary in His exterior appeal. He blended in with the people of His culture and era. He may therefore have had a beard since many men did. But there is no precise record for us to know for sure. History reflecting the culture of the time indicates that it would have been very ordinary and very normal to wear a beard. So possibly Jesus had a beard.

Was Jesus a hippy or a marginal person?

There is nothing in the New Testament Bible to suggest that Jesus was a hippy or a marginal person.  History and the Bible reveal that Jesus looked very ordinary. He blended in with the crowd. He was poor but not a beggar. And there’s no suggestion that He didn’t work or was marginal in any way. On the contrary, Jesus worked as a carpenter.

He was however a person who depended entirely and solely on God His heavenly Father. He had no set place to lay His head and said of Himself, “Foxes have holes, and birds have nests but the Son of man has nowhere to lay His head”In this way, He was different than other people. In this way, He could be perceived as not living an ordinary life.

Jesus believed in and encouraged hard work and in no way encouraged a marginal way of life.
