Why did Jesus choose to obtain the stater from a fish rather than from a more conventional source of money?
Peter put Jesus on the line to pay the temple tax and Fishing was Peter's specialty, God-given talent. Jesus was concerned that the tax-collectors would "stumble" and later not accept His salvation (because of the animosity at not paying the tax would cause) and this was soooo important to not let that happen that Jesus used Peter and his gifting of fishing to solve this predicament. Jesus is also, in a way, using Peter to become a Fisher of Men...JMHO

This is a parable. Jesus disapproved of organized religion (‘the traditions of men’). He declared “Render unto God that which is God’s and unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s”. Why were the religionists demanding money in God’s name? Jesus’ advice was an example of divine irony/sarcasm. When he told Peter to pay with a silver coin taken from the mouth of a fish he was saying that if it was God’s will then God would provide the coin. In modern idiom Jesus was telling Peter to pay ‘When pig’s fly
