The Christmas story, therefore, affects us today because it reminds us of the miracle of Jesus`s birth, that God became a man like us and yet He was still God. It also reminds us of God`s humility--that He chose to be born in a stable, to live in poverty and to deny Himself of His rights as God (see Philippians 2 in the New Testament). Christmas also reminds us that Christ is a gift to us--the gift of new life and salvation. (That`s why many Christians give gifts at Christmas.)
Christmas is a reminder of God`s ultimate goodness, His compassion and love for mankind. It is a time when we can reflect on all that Jesus gave up for us, and on all that He did to save us.
Great truths are reflected in the Christmas story. Consider this: Jesus the baby received the visit of shepherds, and wise men or kings. Jesus was the True Shepherd (read the Gospel of John chapter 10). He was the King of Kings (read the end of Revelation at the end of the New Testament). And He was wisdom personified (read the book of Proverbs in the Old Testament).
Consider the gifts the wise men/kings brought to Jesus: gold, frankincense and myrrh. If you study the meanings and symbolism behind these gifts you will learn that they reflect Jesus`s deity, priesthood and death on the cross and resurrection. Jesus is God, He is the great and ultimate High Priest who ever lives to intercede for us. And He died on the Cross for our sins, and lives today. Every aspect of the Christmas story teaches us something about Jesus today. Thus, the Christmas story continues to affect us today. I would encourage you to read it in the Bible and study it.
