What does Jesus mean by "I desire compassion, and not sacrifice?"
The first time Jesus quoted this verse he had just called Matthew the tax-collector to be one of his disciples. Apparently Matthew used his influence as a tax-collector to bring others to spend time with the Lord. And it happened that as He was reclining at the table in the house, behold many tax-gatherers and sinners came and were dining with Jesus and His disciples. And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to His disciples, Hosea 6:6
