Why did Jesus´ penalty for "sin" need to include physical and emotional pain - why not just spiritual separation from God?
Because it was the way he can purchase us from the Sin because he was the only sucrfice that can meet the expetation

Jesus was born into a mortal world and the pain (physical and emotional) he suffered on the cross is the pain we mortals would feel under this horrible kind of suffering.  He suffered the physical pain for our sins and his emotional pain was being separated from God for the time he was on the cross until he was received into Gods presence.

God needed to experience the total impact that sin has upon humanity.....physically, emotionally and spiritually.

He had to endure physical and emotional man because only then he could show to the world that He experienced all possible suffering which we as humans could suffer...that He actually went through all of that so that when we go through any kind of suffering we may know that Christ would understand and we can throw all our cares upon Him

Jesus penalty of sin include physical and emotional pain because Jesus died for the sins of us (mankind), so that we do not suffer spiritual pain but that we can enter the presence of God.

"Was Jesus trying to incite his death (eg. temple cleansing, accusation of leaders?)
I had never thought of his actions in that way.  However, I believe they had already made their decision to have him executed, they were just bideing their time.  Jesus saw wrongs happening and He took action, which would have happened whether or not He would be condemned to death.
