Jhon was explaining that he was not Christ but the one who came before him in order to prepare others for the come of Christ.  When he was ask if he was he denies three times.  When I think of this I remember the part where Peter denied Christ three times everything leads up to Jesus death and how long he would be in the grave.  Three days and nights and than Jesus would rise again. It is amazing how the number three is used for a number of things in the bible relating to Jesus.

Why did JesusĀ“ penalty for "sin" need to include physical and emotional pain - why not just spiritual separation from God?

Because we suffered, Jesus took upon himself our suffering, pain, and sin to free us from it by dieing for us and taking our sins onto himself.  Jesus was the last sin offering.  Now though Jesus we can pray to our Father in Heaven and ask for forgiveness of our sins.

"Was Jesus trying to incite his death (eg. temple cleansing, accusation of leaders?)

No Jesus was not.  When you read thought out the New Testament you do not find anything about Jesus trying to incite his death.  He did for tell his death when the time was right but not until than.   Jesus came to live, teach, and suffer for our sins in order for us to be able to God's children thought his son Jesus all these thing came about.

Why does Jesus call "Love One Another" a "New" commandment?
We are to love each other as we love Jesus and it is a new commandment.  This was not a part of the ten commandments but a new one and as we read God's words there are more new commandments that Jesus teachs to us to follow and obey .

What is the Kingdom of God?
The Kingdom of God is where we do for those who need help, give of our time, and to even provide food for those who need it.  What ever we do here on earth and we are doing it because the earth and everyone on it is God Kingdom.
