Storing Up Treasures in Heaven
It's important to realize that Jesus doesn't advocate a poverty mentality. Rather, Jesus encourages us to pursue riches. Yet, He offers us wisdom in the pursuit of riches. He advises us not to store up treasures here on the earth whether they rust, break and can get stolen. Instead, we are wise to store up our riches in heaven where they will remain with us throughout all of eternity.

My point is that Jesus doesn't focus on making choices of suffering for suffering's sake. Rather, we make sacrifices to give up one thing in order to receive another. Some people make the mistake of focusing on suffering as an end unto itself and Jesus never advocates this lifestyle.

He is focused on us finding the source for true wealth and life. He is the only true source. He wants us to enjoy the very best life has to offer. But, it does come down to a matter of choice. We can't necessarily have the best this life has to offer while at the same time storing up for ourselves the treasures offered by heaven. When given a choice, storing up eternity treasures yields much better eternal reward.

The Nature of God
This is the very nature of God. He chooses to love. He chooses humility and lowliness. We stoops down the level of the lowest. He does so because this is His nature. He isn't acting, He is being Himself. We are watching the kinds of choices our God makes when we witness the behavior of Jesus.
