What did you learn about Jesus` background that stands out or surprises you?
That you say He followed the Jewish law precisely, except for Him claiming to be God. This is entirely false. He broke the Sabbath repeatedly; He broke Kosher laws; He did not uphold the punishment for adultry; He encouraged others to believe He was the Messiah; He encouraged pacifism vs. rebellion against Rome; He was an anti-materialist; He encouraged celibacy; and He berated the Priests` teachings on Honoring thy parents. In short, He violated many laws, and supported others not to follow all of the 10 Commandments. He was an anti-literalist where necessary.

Hell and Damnation
So much of what Jesus taught was about Judgment Day and the consequences of various deeds: gnashing of teeth and being turned away from Heaven. Followers must know what he thought were important misdeeds in order to avoid damnation. It`s a topic that is not popular at present, but that does not mean that He did not talk about this topic...and He talked about it alot!
