"According to Jesus, what does it mean to be loved by God?"
To be loved by God means that one is following the teachings of Jesus, applying his words to their lives.

What role, if any, do people play in growing the field of God
We plant seeds of Christ with people (Love, longsuffering, patience, kindness...) and when God has grown the seeds into plants and they are ripe we are able to have much more of an impact ministering to them because their hearts have become like fertile soil.

Differentiating between people.
God is not a respecter of persons.  It is the heart that He is interested in. He sent His own Son to those who others had no respect for because they were poor.

Quiet Time
It is difficult to communicate with God when others are present. Perhaps that is why the middle of the night or early morning are his most popular times to waken us.

Material Things
They have no real value. Jesus did not require much. He did not hold on to material things. He did not have his own house and when his ministry began he did not even stay at home with his parents. He lived amongst the people and walked from place to place. His teachings were most important to him. It was about others and he did not represent material riches. He said that it would be harder for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God than a camel to get through an eye of a needle.  That is serious. There are too many in need for others to have too much and not even be able to use what they have. Jesus said "that which you do to unto the least of my brothers that you do unto me".
