Jesus says those who are healthy or have not problems won't appreciate my mercy. I want the sinners who will repent. Any man who is righteous has no need for a blessing, because he has received all he needs, so he thinks. But since Jesus knows our hearts, he know those that want to be forgiven of their sins and want to live righteous will be more grateful of the blessing he has in store. He knows that they will be living witnesses to the greatness He possesses to make believers out of non-believers. He called for Matthew so he can heal him of his sins and once Matthew was healed, he could tell the people of the land of his great fortune of healing and forgiveness.
The Jews wanted to persecute Jesus because they thought he compared himself to God and no one is greater that or as great as God. Jesus says he is merely mimicking God, however, God gave him authority to judge wether some are granted eternal life base on his level of belief and understanding. The day of reckoning is the real test on whether they are granted into the Kindom because of the will of his Father, God. That is the day that what was done in the dark will come to light and those that choose to stay in darkness as non-believers will face judgement.
When Jesus appeared before them, they thought He was a spirit. He assured them that He was real, because of his flesh and bones; spirits are not made of the flesh. This was his proof that He was sent from the heavens to heal the sick, provide shelter and forgive men of their sins. He is living proof that His life was sacrificed so that they could live and be healed. He also wanted them to be witnesses so that they can tell others the good things that He has done.
Jesus know that the man would be much more grateful if he was healed of his ailment than to be foregiven of his sins. Jesus knows our thoughts and he knew how much being able to walk meant to the paralytic man, so he gave him the greatest give he would appreciate.
