True love results in putting the object of affection before oneself. As this is the second greatest commandment (after loving God with all our hearts) it surely follows that we put others before ourself, in our thoughts, words and deeds.
You are right. We are required to spread the word. I happened on a blog recently whereby a question reported the difficulty of leading others to Jesus in a clearly and atheistic West where money and material aspirations outweigh spirituality by the masses. A given answer illustrated the difficulties faced by the disciples of Jesus. They managed to spread the 'Good News' despite widespread persecution of Christians unto death. Surely it is easier today than in their day.
I believe that Jesus is more than a representative. Jesus is the 'Word' and the 'word' was with God when he made creation. It therefore follows that Jesus has been with God for all time. Jesus has the full authority of God and was sent by him to atone for sin inherent in all of us. He was sent to replace animal sacrifice as the 'last' sacrifice' (the sacrificial Lamb of God) to achieve full forgiveness of sin unworthy that we are of this sacrifice. It therefore follows that he is our Saviour, redeemer, and our only route to God.
