Why does Jesus call "Love One Another" a "New" commandment?

Jesus' command to love one another appeared in the new testament which is directly connected to the "ten commandments" handed down by God to the Israelites through Moses as written in  the old testament.

While Jesus called Loving One Another as a new commandment, it is not exactly new but a mere rehash of the original 10 commandments.  The ten commandments were a series of don'ts, things that should not be done which was later translated or summarized by Jesus through his commandment of loving one another.  The old testament spoke of eye for an eye and toooth for a tooth, but Jesus spoke of offering the other cheek if the other side is hurt.  Walking an extra mile for someone.  He showed humility as the first step to abide by God's command to love one another as He loved us.  He showed His love for mankind by giving up His life for our salvation.  On our part, he is not even asking us to give up our life but we are asked to give love.

"According to Jesus, what does it mean to be loved by God?"

Jesus says that the love of God is deep, it is endless and many of us thought that it was unconditional.  Some complain, however, if unconditional, why then  do we have to obey all of God's commands which oftentimes are difficult to follow"  God's love is indeed unconditional, but there are conditions for us to really experience the love of God.  When we feel that God is far away, let's find out if God left us or we veered away from Him, from His thoughts, His presence, His teachings.  He laid down commands for us to pursue and follow, these are qualifications for us to be with Him.  Indeed poor sinners like us are the ones who need most the love of God.  To experience this love, we need to know God more, serve Him and love Him in return..From the very start God had a good plan for us and has our welfare in mind.  Allowing us to humble ourselves, repent and return to Him, therefeore, is the manifestation in the strongest sense of God's love.

Does Jesus believe lowly people are valuable? How valuable?

In today's lesson, Jesus revealed himself valuing lowly people more.  He deals with sinners, tax collectors, children, widows, Samaritan woman, the downcasts, those taken by society for granted.  Indeed to Jesus these people are very valuable because they are the ones who need to know God more.

Define "Compassion"?
Compassion is sharing emotions, particularly feelings of grief and pain.  A heart that bleeds for the marginalized, for those who have less in life; for the poor, blind, captives and oppressed as stated on the book of Isaiah read before the elders by Jesus Christ himself when he was just 12 years of age and impressed upon the learned that he was indeed responsive to the needs of others.  Compassion is one character that distinguishes a Christian from others.
