How did Joseph know it was a real angel appearing to him in his dreams, and not just , for example, indigestion?
In the Bible, when an angel of the Lord appeared to someone they always announced first, "Do not be afraid..."  That is a sure sign the message is from God and from a real angel from God.

Why did Jesus“ penalty for "sin" need to include physical and emotional pain - why not just spiritual separation from God?
Jesus Christ is a human being; we are human beings. Jesus shows us how to make it through physical and emotional pain. He experienced it as some of us have and do experience it. He obeyed His Father and fulfilled the Scriptures. We are to humble ourselves as He did, "bear our crosses" as He did, put our faith and trust in Him as He did His Father, and we will be in heaven with Him and the Father. As human beings, spiritual separation from God is not even a thought or felt by some... oh, woe to them. For us who know Him, it would be pain completely unbearable. But, we must endure as did Jesus.  The rewards are great. We must just follow in the footsteps of Jesus!

One question was asked concerning the abundant life spoken of in John 10:10-just what is that? Jesus says he came to give us abundant llife, but how do we begin to live it?
We begin by looking at God's standard, His commands, and His law to find that we have not obeyed them perfectly and have fallen short of keeping them. Sin is darkness. It darkens our understanding and ruins our living. Jesus said: "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life."-John 8:12. John 10:10-"... I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full". This means a changed life from sin to righteousness, the fruit of the Spirit instead of the works of the flesh. We need to be reborn spiritually. We live this abundant(full)life by knowing God intimately, trusting Him, having faith to live in a fallen world, yet we can trust God who is watching over us. We have hope for today no matter what may happen and hope for our future. We can love God who gave the ultimate sacrifice in laying down the life of His human body to save us from the penalty of our sins, and because of this new life, love is indwelled in us that we are also able to love people in a greater manner, even those we may not know.

"Was Jesus trying to incite his death (eg. temple cleansing, accusation of leaders?)
No, I do not think so.  He was teaching right up until the end from Scriptures. Everything had been written; the Pharisees, Saducees, and high priests were all familiar with Scripture and they knew who Jesus was, but the Scripture had to be fulfilled, and it was.  Jesus did not incite his death, he fulfilled the Scripture... it was written...
