Until that point, he had lived a traditional life. It was his proclamation that he was God that prompted the Jewish leaders to ask for his execution. Jesus was tortured and crucified. He returned from the dead 3 days later and it was his ressurection and subsequent appearances that led many to believe in him, initially at their own risk.
