November 24, 2007 1 Thessalonians 5:12-28 Short Study in Instruction
Final Instructions 12Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you. 13Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other. 14And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone. 15Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else. 16Be joyful always; 17pray continually; 18give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. 19Do not put out the Spirit's fire; 20do not treat prophecies with contempt. 21Test everything. Hold on to the good. 22Avoid every kind of evil. 23May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it. 25Brothers, pray for us. 26Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss. 27I charge you before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers. 28The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Paul writes the above pastoral instructions to the Thessalonian church and within these verses are instructions that are essential to living a Christlike life and continuing to focus in the word of God. The first thing mentioned in verse 12 is respect for those who work hard in the church. There are many people within a church who go above and beyond in their service to God. There are also those who for whatever hindrances, be it, physical health, distance from church, or other circumstances are unable to spend the time to attend to the physical duties. This means that those of us who can't have an obligation to do that which is in our power to support the workers. Prayer is one of the greatest of those supports. Paul addresses this later down in verse 17 which simply reads PRAY CONTINUALLY. Let's look at the list from start to finish. Following respect, we have instructions to hold workers in high regard through love. Love is the cornerstone of it all! Love of our creator, love of our neighbors, even love of our enemies. You can't be Christian and not love. Next we have live in peace with each other. There it is....my eternal quest even before I began living a Christian life. Peace with God at the head of your life, peace in knowing where you stand, even peace in knowing there is a limit to what your enemies can do to you and that peace is the end result of it all. He instructs us next to warn the idle. The Christian life as a human here on earth is subject to the pressures of Satan who is constantly trying to find ways to turn us from God. One of his first footholds is idleness. We must be constantly keeping God and his word in the forefront. Encourage the timid. We must teach to never be afraid to stand up for your beliefs. Someday you'll have to or be trampled asunder. Help the weak and be patient with everyone. The most difficult part of this for me is being patient with everyone. I am learning to be patient even with those who make very wrong decisions. When people have choices, unless they rely on God's help through Jesus Christ, then they are apt to choose wrong things for the wrong reasons. With God's help and with the blessing of wisdom that only he can give perhaps I can learn to be patient with others that seem severely lacking in any wisdom at all. Never pay back wrong for wrong...Let's see...simple math here...wrong + wrong=", well you know...wrong! Be kind to each other. This goes hand in hand with love and peace. You can't have love and the desire for peace in your heart and not be kind. Be joyful always. This isn't easy to do unless you are so entrenched in the word of God that you fully understand that the end result of everything good or bad will end with no sorrow and happiness will abound. Pray continually and give thanks in all circumstances. ALL circumstances...yes! God allows your circumstances always for a reason...whether it is discipline...or education...or perhaps to steer you in the direction you should go. No matter how bad it gets God is always beside you! Do not put out the Spirit's fire, do not treat the prophecies with contempt. As a Christian, just knowing the importance of keeping in the spirit and the fact that a great portion of the Bible is prophecy, and fulfilled prophecy at that, should keep us within these instructions. Test everything, hold on to the good, avoid every kind of evil. We will encounter many things and God expects us to test everything to see if it holds up to being of a righteous nature. (Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is-- his good, pleasing and perfect will. (NIV) Romans 12:1-2). Avoid every kind of evil...and this is the most difficult of all. The road is narrow my friends and we are not promised an easy journey through this world but it all is worth anything that comes our way. My afflictions are many though the worst are not visible but I now am finding joy and peace in spite of them and give thanks to Jesus Christ , my Savior, who was sent to save me from them, and praise God for loving me and caring about the speck of dust named “Jeff”. September 29, 2007 The Word The WordJesus at one time in his many teachings had likened the Word to a seed. He explained it as follows: Mark 4
1 And again he was teaching by the seaside. And a very great number of people had come to him, so that he got into a boat on the sea and took his seat; and all the people were on the land by the seaside. 2 And he gave them teaching about a number of things in the form of stories, and said to them in his teaching, Give ear: 3 A man went out to put seed in the earth: 4 And while he was doing it, some was dropped by the wayside, and the birds came and took it for food. 5 And some went on the stones, where it had not much earth; and it came up straight away, because the earth was not deep: 6 And when the sun was high, it was burned; and because it had no root, it became dry and dead. 7 And some went among the thorns, and the thorns came up, and it had no room for growth and gave no fruit. 8 And some, falling on good earth, gave fruit, coming up and increasing, and giving thirty, sixty, and a hundred times as much. 9 And he said to them, Whoever has ears, let him give ear. 10 And when he was by himself, those who were round him with the twelve put questions to him about the purpose of the stories. 11 And he said to them, To you is given the secret of the kingdom of God, but to those who are outside, all things are given in the form of stories; 12 So that seeing they may see, and it will not be clear to them; and hearing it, they will not get the sense; for fear that they may be turned again to me and have forgiveness. 13 And he said to them, If you are not clear about this story, how will you be clear about the others" 14 The seed is the word. 15 And these are they by the wayside, where the word is planted; and when they have given ear, the Evil One comes straight away and takes away the word which has been planted in them. 16 And in the same way, these are they who are planted on the stones, who, when the word has come to their ears, straight away take it with joy; 17 And they have no root in themselves, but go on for a time; then, when trouble comes or pain, because of the word, they quickly become full of doubts. 18 And others are those planted among the thorns; these are they who have given ear to the word, 19 And the cares of this life, and the deceits of wealth, and the desire for other things coming in, put a stop to the growth of the word, and it gives no fruit. 20 And these are they who were planted on the good earth; such as give ear to the word, and take it into their hearts, and give fruit, thirty and sixty and a hundred times as much. Now I don't know about you but when I read this I relate it in terms to my life, which is supposed to be what a Christian does when he reads the Bible. In doing so, I imagine my faith and beliefs as if one of those seeds were me. I refuse to allow Satan to take the seed that is me away. I also cannot be joyful upon receiving the seed and allow it to stop growing because of the trouble I encounter in this life. In my study of the Word, God tells me that most certainly there will be times of trouble and there will be hardships. I am not excused from the workings of this world because I am physically still in it. My Lord has given me not only the instructions on dealing with it but will supply me the strength to endure it until such time as he decides to allow it to change or until he is ready to bring me out of it. A Christian must, as I have said before, keep an open mind as to God's reasons and the understanding that those reasons may not be immediately known. Faith in the judgment of God is the key here. I also refuse to allow the trappings of this world to make the growth of my seed cease. Whatever is in this world will not go with me beyond this world and since God has supplied me with what I need for my eternity I need not concern myself with the tangible things. This brings me to the seed in Jesus's story that falls to the good earth thereby bearing fruit. These writings I do each week serves a dual purpose. It is Gods fruit from the planting of the seed that is me. I must admit to also using these writings as a way for me to communicate with God. When I open my mind to thought as I read my Bible he brings into my mind those things that I should be paying attention to. I cannot focus my life in the proper direction if I do not continue each day spending time with God in both prayer and the Word. God has supplied the seed with the formula for growth (the Word) as he does in each Christian who pays heed to the Word. What happens to your seed depends on you. I find in my own life that refusing to acknowledge what is right is a sign of weakness of character and my life has had too many character flaws prior to my present relationship with God. I cannot allow myself to turn back to something I know to be wrong. I will go on in my trust in God, in spite of anything to the contrary in this world. My prayer is that you too will let the Word be entwined with your life here so that we may stand together in the kingdom of God and see his smile!

September 17, 2007 Keeping in the Spirit Often times I hear of Christians that were enthusiastic about their decision of belief in Jesus Christ but then become discouraged because they seem unable to retain that level of enthusiasm. Can't you step back for a moment and understand why this may be happening" Each day we are presented more and more with the evilness that dwells in our world. It's easy to become discouraged when you are pounded each day by the opposing forces of Satan unless you spend as much time in the truth of God's word. For those of you who become discouraged...Remain encouraged by surrounding yourself with him, constantly seeking him...Don't act, speak, or think from the flesh: do it from the spirit of God. If you want something badly enough....seek it! Psalms 119:2 says "Happy are they who keep his unchanging word, searching after him with all their heart." God has shown us in our interaction with this world that the things humans seem to value most are the things they seek, work towards, and acquire. In the realm of worldly possessions why does it seem that the man who works hard for his riches uses them more wisely than the man whose riches are handed him with no effort on his part" When you give of your time and efforts to seek something of value don't you hold it more dearly thereby using it more wisely" God gives you the way to keep your spiritual fervor alive and growing. Look at Psalms 119:35 "Make me go in the way of your teachings; for they are my delight." When you let God in control of your life initially, you feel wonderfully excited and relieved because you have placed your faith in God's promise of blessing your life. The excitement you experienced dulls only because of a failure to continue with using the tools God has blessed you with. Mark 11:24-25 "For this reason I say to you, Whatever you make a request for in prayer, have faith that it has been given to you, and you will have it. And whenever you make a prayer, let there be forgiveness in your hearts, if you have anything against anyone; so that you may have forgiveness for your sins from your Father who is in heaven." It's perfectly human to become discouraged and to become overwhelmed at times with worry but God tells NOT to worry about our worldly needs. Philippians 4:6 "Have no cares; but in everything with prayer and praise put your requests before God." And in 1Peter 5:7 "Putting all your troubles on him, for he takes care of you." And my personal favorite, Matthew 6:25-26 " So I say to you, Take no thought for your life, about food or drink, or about clothing for your body. Is not life more than food, and the body more than its clothing" See the birds of heaven; they do not put seeds in the earth, they do not get in grain, or put it in store-houses; and your Father in heaven gives them food. Are you not of much more value than they"" When you worry, pray to God and explain that you are worried though you know not to be and allow him to relieve you of it. By studying God's word, by communicating with God through prayer, by seeing how the sacrifices you have made pale in comparison to those of Jesus Christ, and by doing these things often then the excitement and the relief continues. Matthew 7:8 "Because to everyone who makes a request, it will be given; and he who is searching will get his desire, and to him who gives the sign, the door will be open." That desire should be for a life in service to God through Jesus Christ. In Christ, Jeffrey Crisp |
