January 31, 2008 Why does Jesus call "Love One Another" a "New" commandment?
In the 10 commandments it says to love thy neighbor as thyself. This means to love all people. I believe that Jesus may call this a "new" commandment because He is not specifically referring to loving everyone and anyone but He is talking to believers and telling them to love each other ie the family of believers as He had loved them while He was with them. They were to care for each other, serve each other, fellowship with each other. People would see the believers as being a true "family" where they helped each other out(even believers that they had never met before) and this would be a sign that they were deciples of Jesus. I think the distinction between the old and the new commandment is about who each applies to.
