I believe Joseph of Arimathaea was a pious and an ardent believer of Jesus; he believed Jesus was the Son of God.

June 25, 2012 What about Jesus` death impressed the Centurian so much that He realized Jesus was the Son of God?
Among the many impressions the Centurion had were the darkness that suddenly engulfed the place until the 9th hour,the earthquake that shook the place,the opening of tombs of old and the spirits of the prophets coming out of them were enough for him to realize that Jesus was the Son of God.

Yes Peter betrayed Jesus out of fear but today people are still not only afraid but rather feel shy and proud to be identified with Jesus.
