What is my journey/story with Jesus?
I invited Jesus into my heart when I was sixteen at a Teens Encounter Christ retreat. For the next fifteen years I really didn`t give him permission to be Lord of all of my life, just when I was in trouble. When I was 31 years old, I began to give more of my life to His lordship and power. I started reading the Bible and joined a small group. Slowly I began to learn more about Jesus and let him change my life and my heart. I have always been a skeptic. Slowly my doubts were addressed through studying the Bible, prayer, and discussing my tough questions with other believers. Over the last ten years I have gotten involved in ministry and God has shown me that I could use my entrepreneurial skills to glorify God. I think the church is changing, and that there are new ways for believers to live out their faith in community with others. Jesus said the two greatest commandments are to love God and to love others. I think that we need to get better at those two commandments and to live our lives like Jesus makes a difference in it.
How has Jesus helped me (with self, family, work)?
Jesus has loved me and forgiven me while I was still pretty self-absorbed and making bad choices. He has gently drawn me into a relationship with him. It has made all the difference in the world to me: how I view myself, how I interact and relate to my family and the work I now choose to do.
How has Jesus changed me?
I was someone who was looking for approval and glory for myself. My relationship with Jesus has changed all that. The new me is someone that wants to give glory to God in all that I do. I`ve gone from focusing on myself to focusing on Jesus. I have never been more joyful and peaceful. The other byproducts of my relationship with Jesus are more patience, kindness, genuine loving others, faithful in my promises, more goodness, and basic self-control.
How do I describe "A relationship with Jesus?"
A relationship with Jesus is one that in which I turn to Him often for guidance and direction. He is the only one worthy of all my trust. Jesus shows He loves me in so many ways and that He wants what is best for me. He is trying to help me to know myself, purify the parts that are unholy, and gently show me where I need to change.
How have I experienced Jesus?
I have experienced Jesus and his mercy so many times over this last 25 years. He removes my greatest burdens when I invite Him. His Holy Spirit guides me into all truth. He protects me from bad decisions and people that would harm me. For me the experience is almost physical. In Luke 24, two men encounter Jesus on the road to Emmaus and talk with Jesus for a long time. Afterwards, when they realize it was Jesus they say to each other, Didn`t our hearts feel strangely warm as talked with us on the road? My heart has felt strangely warm many, many times throughout the years of walking with Jesus.
Why and how did I become a follower of Jesus?
I grew up Catholic. I went to 12 years of Catholic school. The last four years were in an all girl Catholic school. Somehow I missed the good news piece of Christianity. I thought God was a mean judge that would squash me like a bug, if I didn`t always do the right thing. And I was a pretty rebellious, willful child. I was constantly going to confession to repent from wrong doing. But then I`d go right back out and do the same things that I confessed the week before. It all seemed pretty futile. I realized I would never be good enough to please God. So inside I gave up when I began my teen years. I kept up the actions but inside my heart was hard. I didn`t like God. He seemed mean to me and judgmental and most of the people that said they believed in him acted the same way - judgmental and unloving. When I was sixteen, I was invited to a weekend retreat called Teens Encounter Christ which was sponsored by the Cursillo Movement, an evangelical charismatic group within the Catholic church. During that weekend, I heard the good news about Jesus. That it is by His grace and mercy that we are made right with God. He died and rose from the dead, so we could be reconciled with our heavenly father. Our job was to repent of all we had done wrong, believe in Jesus and commit to following Him as Lord. Then, it is finished. We do not have to earn our salvation. It is a free gift. Romans 8:1 was refreshing for me when it says, Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those that are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus, the law of the Spirit has free us from the law of sin and death. Now that is good news! However, I didn`t know how to follow Jesus after that first step, so I went fifteen years without giving Jesus much of chance to show and teach me how to live as a follower of his. It was only at age 31 that I finally made some great Christian friends and joined a small group that enabled me to start growing as a Christian.
Why and how did I become a follower of Jesus?
In John 7:66-69, Jesus says to his disciples when many of his followers turned away and desserted him: Are you going to leave? Peter replies, Lord, to who would we go? You alone have the words that give eternal life. We believe them, and we know you are the Holy One of God. I believe that same thing. Where else would I go. Jesus alone is the truth, the way and the life. And He has given me an abundant life that can never be taken awy.
