"Authority" of Jesus
Another thought concerning the questioning of Jesus' authority, is that some rabbis (teachers) at Jesus' time were simply "Torah teachers", meaning they only had the "authority" to teach the "common Torah understanding" of the community.  Those rabbis generally lived in one community and taught from the local synagogue.  There was another "class" of rabbis, those with "sm'kha", (authority), to teach Torah as it was revealed to them from God.  Jesus was a sm'kha rabbi, and these rabbis generally traveled, had disciples (talmidim) and were held in he highest standing.  Jesus demonstrated his sm'kha when in his teachings, he would begin by saying, "you have heard it said......., but I say........".  He was presenting his "yoke", his teaching.  In Matt 11:29, when he say "take my yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart....", he was teaching "different torah interpretation", and obviously the Chief Priests were at least "initially" interested in who Jesus was, and then became threatened as Jesus would soon oppose the way the temple and sacrificial systems were being forced upon the people.

Why did Jesus answer a question with a question, rather than just telling the Pharisees by what authority He acted?
The Pharisees devised a plan to trap Jesus that will cause Him to blaspheme''so as to arrest Him''..Jesus` wisdom is shown by answering them with an equally tricky question.

Why did Jesus answer a question with a question, rather than just telling the Pharisees by what authority He acted?
Jesus realized that the pharisees were trying to trick Him into offending the crowd.Whatever answer He gave would have offended the crowd. So in turn, He asked the pharisees a question that would equally put them in troublw with the crowd whatever their response. He knew that the crowd at that time, were not yet prepared for His proclamations as John was still the greatest prophet in their own eyes.

Jesus answered a question with a question, rathe than just telling the Pharisees by what authority He acted because He wants them to open their eyes from blindness caused by evil.

Why did Jesus answer a question with a question, rather than just telling the Pharisees by what authority He acted?
The Pharisees were not interested in the answer of Jesus unless it supportes their beliefs. Since Jesus uprooted their belief systems, they were in opposition but were afraid because of the power they saw in operation. Jesus knew that he was not going to please them with any of his anwser because it was against their teachings, so why answer them when the demonstration of the act did not convince them.

Why did Jesus answer a question with a question, rather than just telling the Pharisees by what authority He acted?
Because the pharisees are very legalistic at a fault; Jesus answered their question with another question so that they may see things for what they really are.

Why did Jesus answer a question with a question, rather than just telling the Pharisees by what authority He acted?
Because the scripture says that they ''the Pharisees'' have eyes and don`t see, they have ears and don`t hear. Jesus knew that even though He tell them''the Pharisees'' wouldn`t believe Him and would accuse Him blaspheme.

The Authority of Jesus Questioned

When he had come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said, "By what authority do you do these things? Who gave you this authority?"
Jesus answered them, "I also will ask you one question, which if you tell me, I likewise will tell you by what authority I do these things. The baptism of John, where was it from? From heaven or from men?"
They reasoned with themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will ask us, 'Why then did you not believe him?' But if we say, 'From men,' we fear the multitude, for all hold John as a prophet." They answered Jesus, and said, "We don't know."
He also said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.
