He wanted to see if the Pharisees knew what he was asking, but they didn`t want to answer the right question because they didn`t want to have to answer the right way.

Jesus was testing them, he really knew what they were trying to do so Jesus was smart and asked them about the baptism of John the Baptist. The Pharisees looked at John as a prophet. He wanted them to know

In order for the prophecy to come true, Jesus spoke in a very indirect way. He was testing the chief priests and elders.

The Pharisees intentions are read by Jesus before they would talk. This is the reason to why Jesus wanted to drive them to his point by asking a question to answer their question whose answer they really knew before asking.

The Authority of Jesus Questioned

When he had come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said, "By what authority do you do these things? Who gave you this authority?"
Jesus answered them, "I also will ask you one question, which if you tell me, I likewise will tell you by what authority I do these things. The baptism of John, where was it from? From heaven or from men?"
They reasoned with themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will ask us, 'Why then did you not believe him?' But if we say, 'From men,' we fear the multitude, for all hold John as a prophet." They answered Jesus, and said, "We don't know."
He also said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.
