Why did Jesus answer a question with a question, rather than just telling the Pharisees by what authority He acted?
Instead of answering the question He used a wise way to answer their question by asking question of John`s authority because He knew that by admitting John as His forerunner and the one who prepare His way. It is necessary also to them to receive Him as the Messiah

Why did Jesus answer a question with a question, rather than just telling the Pharisees by what authority He acted?
The Pharisees` questioning was not for information but to gather evidence, a deliberate attempt to undermine Jesus in the eyes of the people. They were attempting to stumble Jesus in His teaching. Jesus by answering with a question caused the Pharisees` to question we don`t know

Why did Jesus answer a question with a question, rather than just telling the Pharisees by what authority He acted?
The Pharisees were not seeking truth or knowledge, but were planted to trap Jesus. This question came after that dramatic eviction of merchants at the temple, and remember that the chief priests and the scribes were indignant about the actions of Jesus- so He Jesus knew their minds, and applied the same currency to reach to the truth about where his authority came from.

Why did Jesus answer a question with a question, rather than just telling the Pharisees by what authority He acted?
Jesus was trying to show the Pharisees that the same authority was working through John the Baptist and Himself. By answering the questions directly, He would not be connecting Himself with John. He was trying to get the priests and elders to see the connection.

Why did Jesus answer a question with a question, rather than just telling the Pharisees by what authority He acted?
Jesus was testing the Pharisees they seem not to understand God`s work even though he was preaching and teaching them. He showed them God`s work through baptism of John, yet they were in doubt. So he asked them a question to see if they really understood God`s work, yet they were at a loss.

Why did Jesus answer a question with a question, rather than just telling the Pharisees by what authority He acted?
Since the Pharisees are hardened and they don't want to believe in Him, only to come and tempted him by what authority he did the work, Jesus knew what is in your heart and they think that they are wise enough to tempt the Lord of lords and the King and kings, however, the best way to silent them is to question them back.

Why did Jesus answer a question with a question, rather than just telling the Pharisees by what authority He acted?
Because He knew what they were thinking and their motives behind their question...He trapped them, and got them to back off...He handled it the best way possible.

Why did Jesus answer a question with a question?
Jesus knew that they would not believe in him altogether because he had told them time and again that he was sent from the Father, he wanted to know whether they could tell his authority from the scriptures of the prophets who announced his coming.

Why did Jesus answer a question with a question, rather than just telling the Pharisees by what authority He acted?
Jesus did that to confuse the pharises even more. As much as they can not prove on whose behalf the John Baptist he doing his job so also it is very difficult to prove Jesus is. Today, there are so many prophet out there preaching the gospel without the spirit of God.

The Authority of Jesus Questioned

When he had come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said, "By what authority do you do these things? Who gave you this authority?"
Jesus answered them, "I also will ask you one question, which if you tell me, I likewise will tell you by what authority I do these things. The baptism of John, where was it from? From heaven or from men?"
They reasoned with themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will ask us, 'Why then did you not believe him?' But if we say, 'From men,' we fear the multitude, for all hold John as a prophet." They answered Jesus, and said, "We don't know."
He also said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.
