What is a disciple of Jesus?
Home > Current Events about Jesus > What is a disciple of Jesus?
A disciple is someone who follows and learns. A disciple is someone being mentored by someone. Thus, a disciple of Jesus is a follower and a learner, someone who both follows Jesus and continues learning about Him and from Him.

When we refer to the twelve disciples, we are referring to those who Jesus chose at the beginning of His ministry.  Jesus had twelve specific disciples when He was on earth as a man. However, in a sense, all who follow Him obediently are also His disciples.

According to the Gospels in the New Testament Bible, the names of the first disciples were: Peter, James, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James, Thaddaeus, Simon (later called Peter), and Judas who betrayed him.

Read the details in this passage:

He went up into the mountain, and called to himself those whom he wanted, and they went to him. He appointed twelve, that they might be with him, and that he might send them out to preach, and to have authority to heal sicknesses and to cast out demons: Simon, to whom he gave the name Peter; James the son of Zebedee; John, the brother of James, and he surnamed them Boanerges, which means, Sons of Thunder; Andrew; Philip; Bartholomew; Matthew; Thomas; James, the son of Alphaeus; Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot; and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.  (Mark 3:13-19).
