When asked about a religious practice (fasting), why does Jesus describe how old and new may not be compatible?
Jesus clearly stated that His deciples could not fast becuse He was present and that He came with the new covanant of which mixing the old and new convanant at that time, the new tear way and Jesus did not want this to happen. In short the old testament prophets did there best but cannot be compared to Jesus. With Jesus at that point in time the deciples could not fast unless Jesus vanish from them. When we face a problem which is unsolved , fasting is the key since Jesus accended in heaven. He is with us through the Holy Spirit. AMEN!

When asked about a religious practice (fasting), why does Jesus describe how old and new may not be compatible?
Jesus was right for He Himself can not be used to compare with Adam, Moses, and even the old heros of the Bible. He knew why He came. He knew that he must furfill the assignment Adam fails to do for sin`s sake, He was all fresh and uncomparable in different ways.

When asked about a religious practice (fasting), why does Jesus describe how old and new may not be compatible?
It is because he came to introduce rules of the new testament which requires a new personality, change of mind to involve in spiritual activities like fasting. He told them they cannot fast and recieve spirtitual blessings while still doing evil things and not accepting the rules of God;and god Himself. He wanted to show that fasting is a spiritual process done with a renewed mind, ready to believe and accept the Lord`s will with a clean heart. Not a ritual to do in the absence of mind.

Mark`s Biography of Jesus - Jesus Questioned About Fasting
I BELIEVE THAT THIS PASSAGE IS TALKING ABOUT PEOPLE AND THEIR RELIGIONS WHO THINK THAT THEY CAN COME TO GOD ON THERE OWN AND NOT THEIR HEARTS.BUT JESUS SAYS THAT YOU HAVE TO COME TO HIM WITH ALL YOUR HEART AND BE BORN AGAINSO THAT YOU CAN BE CLEANSED OF THE HUMANSACRAFICE AND BE SACRAFICED OF THE HEART.

When asked about a religious practice (fasting), why does Jesus describe how old and new may not be compatible?
The traditions of the pharisees was to oppress the people with the law while they were not going as by the commandments, so they expected Jesus to be like them.

When asked about a religious practice (fasting), why does Jesus describe how old and new may not be compatible?
Matthew 23:19 19You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred? The example of fasting given here in the question is one of many examples of the rules and regulation, that were demanded by GOD yahweh of his people to follow.so the israelites were asked by God to follow certain rules so as to be able to come before God & be acceptable to Gods holyness.in pr-calvary to be holy and arighetous& dwell with God meant to follow those rules which was something impossible to do , where as after the coming of christ & after calvary the whole redemption of sin had passed away from physical acts and blind obedience to the precious gift of faith.Faith in the blessed holy sacrificial blood of jesus christ which was shed for mankind once and for all .So the old ways and the new ways are incompatible in the fact that where as in the old testament mankind had to slave blindly for the redemption of his sin and the eternal life promised by God to all, after calvary , we had that free gift of just accepting jesus as our lord and saviour for our salvation.the old ways being temporary acts where as the new ways were permanent

I`ll just write what I`m thinking. It may not even come close to answering the question, but I`ll share it anyway. When I think of fasting, I think of hunger. In the old days, ''before Jesus came'', people were hungering to have their sins forgiven. And so they had rituals to follow, in hopes of having their sins forgiven. The blood sacrifices and the fasting were a part of these rituals. But now that Jesus was there among them, they no longer needed these rituals. For He would be the only way to redemption. He would become the blood sacrifice, to wash away our sins. We no longer need to hunger ''or fast'', for our joy is in knowing that we have a way to reach our Heavenly Father.

Jesus Questioned About Fasting

John's disciples and the Pharisees were fasting, and they came and asked him, "Why do John's disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples don't fast?"
Jesus said to them, "Can the groomsmen fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they can't fast. But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then will they fast in that day. No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, or else the patch shrinks and the new tears away from the old, and a worse hole is made. No one puts new wine into old wineskins, or else the new wine will burst the skins, and the wine pours out, and the skins will be destroyed; but they put new wine into fresh wineskins."
