Throughout the Old Testament the sinfullness of man is contrasted with the Holiness of God. Our sin separates us from God. Because of God's character and who He is, blood sacrifice was the only way we could be atoned for our sins. The sacrifice was usually a perfect lamb. But the blood sacrifice of animals was never good enough. The Bible tells us that Jesus was the "Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world." Jesus was that perfect Lamb who had to suffer physically to satisfy the requirements for forgiveness of sins. There was no other way.
