Why did JesusĀ“ penalty for "sin" need to include physical and emotional pain - why not just spiritual separation from God?
So that he could know/feel/empathize what we humans go through, even though he knows all our thoughts.

How does being forgiven increase ones love for God? Note: According to Jesus, God`s forgiveness is motivated by love.
I think our love for God stems from how much we have been forgiven. I have been forgiven for SO much, and when I get a glimpse of how much that is, I get so thankful. Out of that thankfulness flows love. For me, Luke 7:41 and 7:47 says it all.

1 John 4:19 says we love Him because He first loved us. God gave us His love thru the sacrifice of His Son thus giving us an example of what love really is. Without Him we are nothing.

What does it mean to be loved by God?
In these verses, they each point to one of two words, "obedience" and "giving". We show our love (partially - we also show our love through service, worship, etc.) through obedience and He shows His love to us through giving. To think that God loves us enough to sacrifice His son for us shows us the value that He has for us. We see ourselves as unworthy, but He sees us as worthy.

"According to Jesus, what does it mean to be loved by God?"
To be loved by God is to love his son Jesus and to obey and follow his rules. By loving God, we are invited to come and live with him and he with us.

Who do we, in this day and time, consider to be the lowly people?

Does Jesus believe lowly people are valuable? How valuable?
Yes. Valuable enough to spend time with them and be berated for doing so. Valuable enough to die for us all. We are the lowly people no matter what we think.

Define "Compassion"?
Being acutely aware of what people around you are going through and doing something to help, even if it is just being there, (no words or actions) just being there.

An Extraordinary Life
I wonder sometimes what it must have been like for Jesus to live an ordinary life and then to come out of obscurity to set the world on its ear. Did he know or ever think about what would happen when the time came for him to start his ministry? I personally believe that Jesus being who he was and being the son of God, knew what was to be done. He was so attuned to his father's wishes, that he waited and learned all he needed to know so that when the time came to start his ministry, he would be ready.
