Why did Jesus´ penalty for "sin" need to include physical and emotional pain - why not just spiritual separation from God?
I think the physical and the emotional pain came from hate; Jesus was so good and pure and knew what he was preaching. He preached to save because he is the messiah, the Son of God and the chief priests didn't believe who he was. The chief priests were wrong and they knew it so they hated Jesus and wanted to use him as an example. All this was forseen and had to pass.

How do people know the exact day and time that these events happen (during jesus death) when they are not stated in the bible?

"Was Jesus trying to incite his death (eg. temple cleansing, accusation of leaders?)
I don't really understand what the temple or the leaders have to do with this question but to me yes and no to the question. Jesus knew he had to die because it was God will and he could not avoid it because he love God and came to earth for this purpose. Jesus didn't not do the things he did like preaching the word because he knew it would lead to his death, he did them so we could get to know and love God.

Jesus bridges the gap between God and man.  Jesus was The Sacrificial    Lamb.  He was totally God and totally man.

Jesus had to feel the pain and emotions of dying physically to separate physical and spiritually from God. I believe it was symbolic.  The old person must die to be reborn again as a child of God's.

Jesus was bearing the penalty for our sin(s), and as humans we know well the physical and emotional pain of both life and death, so Jesus being fully human, as well as full divine, had to experience all that we have to experience in life and death.  The separation of Jesus from His Father had to be complete so that we can also from Him find the reconciliation to our Father in heaven for all of our being, physical, emotional and spiritual.

Jesus had Godly and human insight about what was going to happen to Him. God sent Jesus down for accomplish several missions.

Jesus knew what He must go thru for our salvation.

"Which of these purposes do you believe Jesus accomplished?"

God sent His Son Jesus down here on earth to accomplish several purposes.

* to tell us about God's never ending love for us, and to spread the Good News.

* Jesus to be a living sacrifice for our sins and how to be forgiven by accepting Jesus as our personal Savior and how to live with Him in Heaven for all eternity.

All what Jesus came for was accomplished.
