Why did Jesus´ penalty for "sin" need to include physical and emotional pain - why not just spiritual separation from God?
Because of this spiritual separation is the heaviest sacrifice which Jesus pays of behalf of mankind, so that mankind does not need to suffer spiritual separation from God.

I think a physical example communicates more than a spiritual one. Men needed to see the mess sin had caused in their life and how expensive it is to pay for that. Infact i have had experience when witnessing where you talk about the wages of sin is death and spitirual separation, it becomes a bit hard to understand since one has been sinning and not yet died and finds it hard to grasp the meaning of spiritual separation but when you mention something closer physical and practical like burning in hell, it becomes easier to sink in the mind.

I think Jesus saw that no matter how much he preached about the kingdom of God, men still remained difficult and sinful thus needed something more than preaching-a physical sacrifice of his own life.

"Was Jesus trying to incite his death (eg. temple cleansing, accusation of leaders?)
All what Jesus did had been earlier prophesied or foretold and the sequence of events culminating to his arrest to death were all in line with the plans and purposes of God. As the bible tells us that many are the plans ina mans heart but its the purpose of God that prevails, many people had their own plans in their hearts on what was happening but its the purpose of God that carried the day- the price of our redemption being paid on the cross through death on an innocent. One thing that surprises me is that all many were ganging up to have Jesus crucified for telling them the truth about the kingdom of God who they claimed to know- what level of blindness. Its my prayer that God will help us to remain in tune with his spirit so that we may learn to understand times and seasons.

Jesus had to suffer physical and emotional pain so that his atonement for our sins would be total.adam and Eve sinned physically by eating the apple and the sin arose from the mind that sought to question the command of God. They therefore physical, emotional and ultimately, spiritual separation from God. Jesus' pain also shows us That He identifies with our physical pains, illness, torture, hunger etc and our emotional situations, divorce, bereavement, loneliness or betraya, having been there himself. Only by casting our cares upon Him can we find spiritual oneness with God

No.  Jesus only wanted us to believe that he was actually the son of God sent from heaven to preach the good news, save souls and finally die for us as the sacrificial lamb.  The leaders - the Pharisees and the Saduccees - were unrighteous and unrepentant therefore, he had to take the bull by the horn. Their livestyles were contrary to what they demonstrated publicly and Jesus being God was able to read their thoughts and exposed them publicly in order for them to repent.  His birth and death were already prophesied, he knew about his purpose on earth and, therefore, he knew when the mission would be accomplished.

No Jesus Christ was not trying to incite His death, because His sacrificial death was an eternal covenant made between Almighty GOD and Jesus even before man was created. GOD and Jesus new that Satan would do his utmost to pull people to his realm, and the only way to redeem sinners is by the sacrificial death of His one and only Son, The perfect sacrifice of the only one to walk on earth who did not sin in mind body and soul. Jesus Christ was, is and will always be the perfect sacrifice for the redemption of sins - Jesus is the Lamb of GOD Who takes away the sins of the world - and that is why His sacrificial death was predetermined, Jesus did not have to incite any body to cause His death. His one and only purpose in coming down to earth is to preach the Good News and die for us. Amen

"Was Jesus trying to incite his death (eg. temple cleansing, accusation of leaders?)
I don't think Jesus was trying to incite His death, He was only doing what He was ordained to do.  Jesus is all knowing, remember He said John 8: 58 “I tell you the truth”, Jesus said, “before Adam was born, I AM.” so He knows all things. He had a task to accomplish which included teaching, healing, raising the dead and to perform all the miraculous things that He did and of course clearing the Temple before His final transistion.  Jesus knew before hand what was happening on earth before He even took on human form and He knew exactly what He had to accomplish before His time of crucifiction.  He had to select persons who will follow His instructions to continue shepherding His flock when He returned to His Heavenly home.  Persons who would follow His teachings, who were willing to endure hardships for the Word. His task was to, as we say, speak the truth and in doing so He would inevitable encounter persons who would want to kill Him. The things He said and did especially for the persons who were marginalized, poor, in need which made a whole multitude of persons follow Him would irk anyone who is jealous of His popularity, angry at His  accusations and have ambitious desires, who sees their hold over people, society and even properties diminishing.  He showed and taught love, compassion, kindness, faith, hope belief in the one True God. He did not come to change the law but to fulfill them and of course to offer us who believe in Him a place in the heavenly home which He has gone to prepare for us who accept Him.  Therefore He knew without a doubt what His cruel ordeal would be like, He saw it being inflicted on persons and this was the only way for Him to save, forgive and take us out of bondage.
