| Why did Jesus´ penalty for "sin" need to include physical and emotional pain - why not just spiritual separation from God? |
I think a physical example communicates more than a spiritual one. Men needed to see the mess sin had caused in their life and how expensive it is to pay for that. Infact i have had experience when witnessing where you talk about the wages of sin is death and spitirual separation, it becomes a bit hard to understand since one has been sinning and not yet died and finds it hard to grasp the meaning of spiritual separation but when you mention something closer physical and practical like burning in hell, it becomes easier to sink in the mind. I think Jesus saw that no matter how much he preached about the kingdom of God, men still remained difficult and sinful thus needed something more than preaching-a physical sacrifice of his own life. | "Was Jesus trying to incite his death (eg. temple cleansing, accusation of leaders?) |
I don't think Jesus was trying to incite His death, He was only doing what He was ordained to do. Jesus is all knowing, remember He said John 8: 58 “I tell you the truth”, Jesus said, “before Adam was born, I AM.” so He knows all things. He had a task to accomplish which included teaching, healing, raising the dead and to perform all the miraculous things that He did and of course clearing the Temple before His final transistion. Jesus knew before hand what was happening on earth before He even took on human form and He knew exactly what He had to accomplish before His time of crucifiction. He had to select persons who will follow His instructions to continue shepherding His flock when He returned to His Heavenly home. Persons who would follow His teachings, who were willing to endure hardships for the Word. His task was to, as we say, speak the truth and in doing so He would inevitable encounter persons who would want to kill Him. The things He said and did especially for the persons who were marginalized, poor, in need which made a whole multitude of persons follow Him would irk anyone who is jealous of His popularity, angry at His  accusations and have ambitious desires, who sees their hold over people, society and even properties diminishing. He showed and taught love, compassion, kindness, faith, hope belief in the one True God. He did not come to change the law but to fulfill them and of course to offer us who believe in Him a place in the heavenly home which He has gone to prepare for us who accept Him. Therefore He knew without a doubt what His cruel ordeal would be like, He saw it being inflicted on persons and this was the only way for Him to save, forgive and take us out of bondage.
