Why did Jesus´ penalty for "sin" need to include physical and emotional pain - why not just spiritual separation from God?
God spoke intermittently and partially by the Old Testament prophets, but finally and fully by His Son. For not to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

Jesus could suffer a physical and emotioanal pain just to show the true love of God and to reveal the mystery of God to the mankind for if it was a spiritual death ,we could not and understand quickly how God so loved the world. That's why He emptied himself and became a human being so as to suffer the pain we could bear because of our sins.

People are able to understand better when they actually feel pain. Separation from God, would not be that impactful, as people, by human nature need physical proof to believe things. So the physical and emotional pain experienced can actually place people in the situation where they can feel what Jesus felt, that way making His mission on earth truly meaningful. Jesus had to go through the pain because his human side had to suffer. That was a more convincing circrifise than, for example being short and dying all at once. It was an example to us that no matter how much we are inflicted by pain and suffering, we should think of the end result. It was to show us that in this world, we shall most probably suffer bodily pain for the sake of entering heaven.
