Why does Jesus call "Love One Another" a "New" commandment? Jesus calls this a new commandment because people at times get so wrapped up in doing things they think please God at the expense of ignoring building relationships. when He says in John 13:34 that by this they will know you are my disciples,he is bringing into light that we need to have unconditional love for all.not loving only those who love us,but even our enemies. Jesus demonstrates unconditional love by trading his life for our salvation,even though we are sinners.the law said,"an eye for an eye" but the new law of love requires that we forgive
