I believe Jesus wanted to know the strength of the rich man's faith in following Him. Why did Jesus tell the rich man to sell all his possessions before coming to follow Him? Because these Earthly riches are worth nothing in heaven. When you follow Jesus you do not need theses riches. When you get to heaven there are better riches for you.

Why didn`t the disciples want little children to come to Jesus? Why did Jesus allow the little children to come? Little children are volunerable to the enemy, and the enemy attacks the youth. Jesus wanted the little children because their are precious. "..and forbid them not." The kingdom belongs to the children, and this privilege should not be taken away from them.
