Why was it important for Jesus to go through a time of temptation?
Because he is fully human and the Son of God. The devil in his pride and jelousy tempts even him. We are called to be his brotehrs and if we walk in his steps and learn from his concrete example we can too see our divine nature prevail over the evil one.

How is Jesus coming into Galilee like light coming into a dark place? What is there about Jesus teaching that is like light?
He breaks through into the clouds of our sinful nature and lifts us up with him through the cross if we embrace ours having aknolwedged him as the King of our hearts and steerer of our souls. The dove bringing the olive branch bringing peace after the cleansing flood. Its white feathers Jesus white robes of purity the new white robe we are given at the moment of Baptism. In the Holy Spirit.

Why was it important for Jesus to go through a time of temptation?
It's not that it was important for Jesus; it was more important for Satan to tempt Him.  Jesus, trough the forty days and nights of fasting and isolation was preparing Himself eagerly for the time that had come for us, when after that, He had started His 3 years of God's proclamation, teachings and ending up His mission on earth on the Holy cross.  Jesus was tempted because Satan took the opportunity to interfere with God's plans, exactly when Jesus was most eager to prepare Himself and weak at the same time from fasting just like any human being.  Jesus, still held on to His Father, and thus it become an important example for us to not give in.  We will surely get most tempted by the evil, exactly when we start to take God seriously and lovingly; and when we fall vulnerable that's the time when evil leads us to temptation.
