Why did Herod try to kill Jesus?

A misunderstanding of one of the key words: kingdom. His thoughts were earth bound whereas the kingdom was the one in Heaven. He was therefore afraid of losing his power the rebellion of the Jews. the king of the Jews was coming...and some of them too listened to wrong prophets or misinterpreted the message. Attachment to eartly things? not treasured enough the Laws and words of the forefathers.

How did Joseph know it was a real angel appearing to him in his dreams, and not just , for example, indigestion?

Messages from the Lord bring peace. He must have known the OT by heart i mean all the relevant references to the future coming of the Saviour and the same treasured in Mary's heart, the one he was destined to marry they were ready to welcome the Word made flesh.Angels only needed a simple key word.

Why did God choose such a unique way (through a virgin birth) to bring Jesus into the world?

We are not talking greek mythology here (beautiful poetry, Zeus becoming having to become a swan to charm Leda). If, as it is, Jesus is the Son of God and is fully human and fully divine the Holy Spirit could only imbue His most perfect human vessel with his Holy Spirit and outpour His Love on us. Awaiting first, God the Almighty father, the yes of a humble virgin maiden ready to protect such pregnancy in a society wehre she could have easily banned and excluded as a unfaithful to the Laws of the Father. When she had just started obeying the most difficult albeit beautiful of God commands like Abraham. imo
