What does this miracle of turning water to wine tell us about Jesus? That his powers are not earthly. Nobody can turn water into wine. We have to be careful though not to see it as only a `magical trick` to show his power, not only because we must not tempt him like the devil did, but also because we must keep solidly in mind the fact that the real miracle is the one of transforming us the old wineskins in new ones ready to hold the outpouring of the spirit. Which is the greater miracle, he said, the fact that you can walk or that you are free from sin?

What caused Nathanael to see Jesus as the Son of God and King of Israel? The fact that although he has never seen Jesus before him, Jesus knew him. Only God can do that.
