On the foretelling of John and Jesus
Putting the two readings togetehr. John is announced as someone who will be favored in the eyes of the Lord his greatness coming firts in the announcement. Then to Mary in private she is told that the King of all kings shall be born. The first private recognition will come from John leaping in his mother'ìs womb when sensing Jesus the King. Then officially he will aknowlege him by saying that someone will come so great that he is not worthy of tieing his sandals...bowing gesture needed. Not worthy of serving. He is annouced as a devout Jew who does not drink in excess etc etc respectful. so great in the eyes of the Lord. Earthly recognition so wehn people look at him with respect all the more when seeing him bowing in front of Jesus...all recognising Jesus as God sent but not yet as God himself till the Resurrection foretold by the raising of Lazarus and that befor by the healing from ailments tht had not brought death yet. Jesus wanting to keep in the shade also to keep the truth as a public display of hsi power would be easily seen as an exagerration like a media productnowadays whereas he wants a chain of mouth by mouth testimonies to circulate ad bring people to the thuth. That is why he asks Joh for the Baptism in water...to annoubnce the true one. Hope noone will think am blasphemous when imagining the two friends lightly winking at each other in bringing on their mission.

No reference to the name but only to him being the Son of God and the eternal King. Also important is the linkto david the human geneaology...Jesus being humanly born out of humankind in a praticular moment of history a crossing point like the line dividing the Red Sea and leaving slavehood (real one from sin) behind.Suppose being Jewish, she knew the name's meaning. The angel only tells her him being the Son of the most powerful One. She was scared at such  wondruos responsibility and now the angel reassuringly tells her that the most precious gift she will carry is the most powerful God made man. So to reassure her as telling her now that the salvation will come through the cross would be too uspetting. He leaves that to old Simeon whose old age and wisdom would offer her reassurance. this morning (for the all family), i lighted a candel in St Michael Church near my school opposite the portriait of an aged saint holding i think baby Jesus. Will find out who he is. These words brought them to haert...the old man reassuring presence.

The Birth of Jesus Foretold

Now in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin's name was Mary. Having come in, the angel said to her, "Rejoice, you highly favored one! The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women!"
But when she saw him, she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered what kind of salutation this might be. The angel said to her, "Don't be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb, and bring forth a son, and will call his name 'Jesus.' He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father, David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever. There will be no end to his Kingdom."
Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, seeing I am a virgin?"
The angel answered her, "The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore also the holy one who is born from you will be called the Son of God. Behold, Elizabeth, your relative, also has conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. For everything spoken by God is possible."
Mary said, "Behold, the handmaid of the Lord; be it to me according to your word."
The angel departed from her.
