Why did Jesus? penalty for sin need to include physical and emotional pain - why not just spiritual separation from God?
Jesus shed his precious blood to forgive our sins and curses.Sheding of blood is physical pain and he was not able to speak one word to his mother during his last time when he saw her he thought about the period Jesus stayed with his mother this includes emotional pain.

He understood why we sinned and what caused our sepration from God. The only atonement was to shed his blood to cover our sins and reconcile with God. We ourselves have to understand why He did what he did for us. He did this because He loves US and wants us to live in freedom eternally. Its up to us to accept or deny what he has done for us. Was Jesus trying to incite his death (eg. temple cleansing, accusation of leaders?)
NO! He was telling the truth about what was going to take place. Only he knew the truth and revealed the truth before those who would not accept the truth that He was the Messiah that was sent to save those who have fallen to sin. Sin blinded them from the truth and could not believe but to argue with the truth. When truth was revealed in the end. Our Lord was risen giving us hope in Him that we may also live eternally with Him. The choice is ours alone to accept him in our lives or deny that He is Lord!
