"Was Jesus trying to incite his death (eg. temple cleansing, accusation of leaders?)
Would a soldier in the Civil War, that was trying to end slavory, take the evil away, and better the United States be trying to incite his death by going to Gettysburg, in July, in the first place. No, he was trying to get rid of the sin of slavory and better his country and the lives of the people in his country. Jesus incitement of his own death, so to speak, was Jesus teaching his people, (the Jews), through his life, how to live beside God, enstead of beside evil.

No, he did not, He knew he was going to die so that you and me can be forgiven our sins and thats how He expressed His love to the entire world.

Why did JesusĀ“ penalty for "sin" need to include physical and emotional pain - why not just spiritual separation from God?
Because Jesus became human and had to experience evrything human except for sin.

When Jesus cried out "My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?", did God answer something the people around couldnĀ“t hear to comfort his son in the difficult moment?

No.

As written, the Father sent His only Son Jesus Christ.

To deliver and bring the Good News.

An obidient disciple, a Son to his Father.

He teached the good news, gave a chance to repent and bring back our faith to God.

And to die in the Cross.

To show His  Great Love to mankind.
