Why did Jesus´ penalty for "sin" need to include physical and emotional pain - why not just spiritual separation from God?
Because he was born as a human being, and as far the scripture were written he will die for the SIN of all the human kind. So, that the world will know him as son of God. I think because of this jesus have to go through this physical and emotional pain.

Jesus had to feel the same kind of pain that man would feel in order to take all the sins of this world upon himself for us.

for our complete salvation and for the love he has for us and because he knew that we cannot save ourself and this is why he gave his only begotten son to suffer for us

A 'sin' of somebody may hurt someone emotionally and/or physically, but as he/she has done it, so he/she has to bear both penalty emotionally & physically.

Because we could not save ourselves. We are no different than Adam & Eve,thouh he gave us the choice to choose,we continue to chose what does not honor our creator,he made us for himself, and we prefer to go hoaring around seeking other Gods,Gods that can do nothing for us.Christ demonstrated the love of the Father in eveything that he did andhe so desparately want us to follo whis example.May we today do as John"Decrease so that Christ"can increase I find it amazing that he would even give us a second though and yet we were on his mind, when he said"It is Finished"what an awesome God we serve!

Jesus came to save sinful humanity who go through in life in all these areas of life (physical, spiritual, emotional....) and sinned against God in all these.. To pay penalty for sin he had to go through by himself what man(Adam) failed. That is why he had to go through separation from His father-God.

The penalty for sin had to include the both emotional and spiritual because he stood a good example to us. He died for our sins bearing all the discomfort on our behalf.

"Was Jesus trying to incite his death (eg. temple cleansing, accusation of leaders?)
Jesus did not incite His death and if any things have been noted as such was just a coincidence in His towards dying and saving us all.

God is not happy with sinners. Jesus had to feel the physical and emotional pain so that we on earth witness it and avoid sins. This stands as a sign that God will forgive us whenever we plead forgiveness and do away of our sins.Jesus had to seperate from God to carry all our sins for us to be save come closer to God.
