What did you learn about Jesus` background that stands out or surprises you?

The most surprizing aspect is the similarities in the political and education system during the the first century. The (boys) start at age five to read and write, formal education is complete at 18. Advanced education invovles being a disciple and getting one one one eduction, which I believe is the intent at least of modern-day graduate school with an academic supervisor. The political similarities are similar, with the intent to have a political system accepting all religions and cultures. Meanwhile in reality some cultures and religions are oppressed within the guise of a certain amount of freedom. This aspect reminds me of Indiginous popluations and cultures in Canada; as they are allowed a certain amount of self-governance but only to the extent that the superceding rulers allow. I don't know that anything specific to Jesus' life background surprizes me based on the readings, just the political system as a whole as I don't really have that much knowledge of the Roman Empire.
