Why does Jesus place commandments to actively love above commandments to refrain from evil (thou shall notâ€Â¦)? Note: Jesus answered with two quotations from the Jewish law about loving God (Deuteronomy 6:4), and about loving neighbors (Leviticus 19:18). Because when you actively love, you would not want to do harm or do evil against that person, or sin against God. Thus by default you would be obeying the other commandments as well.

What actions of the scribes did Jesus warn against? Do we have people who act like this now? The scribes took pride for themselves and covet widows' properties; Jesus warned them about these. There are all kind of people in this wicked world.
