Jesus defines a great person as one who serves others. What did Jesus mean when he said he "did not come to be served, but to serve and give his life as a ransom for many."?

Jesus was describing His role:

1.  He served the needs of others (providing teaching and healing the sick and possessed).

2.  He gave His life so that we could have a meaningful and personal relationship with God.

Society, even now, wouldn't equate service and sacrifice with greatness.  Customer service jobs are low paying and draining.  Sacrfice is seen as a weakness.  Society teaches that greatness is independence, excess and having others serve your needs.  Jesus taught by example - greatness is being mindful of the temporary nature of this life and showing love through a willness to serve and sacrifice.

What is Jesus trying to teach with this parable? Hint: The vineyard (where grapes are grown) is Israel; The farmer is God; the servants are the prophets who were sent by God; the son is Jesus; and the tenants are religious leaders of the Jews.
He is basically saying that in the past and currently, the leaders of the Jews did not give proper homage and respect to God. Even though God has done so much for them.  God will then punish them and open up the Kingdom of God to all who obey.

Why did Jesus answer their question with a question? Why didn`t he just say that his authority came from God?
He knew they were hypocrites and even if He would have answered them, they would not have beleived Him.
