Jesus said old and new fasting practices may not be compatible because the old ways was only done for show by the old priests and pharisees. They did for pity, glory or praise. The new way, Jesus said you only do when He is gone and should be done quietly, without fanfare and without letting people know and then He will give you new life.

When asked about a religious practice (fasting), why does Jesus describe how old and new may not be compatible? In the old days the practice was diffirent and now Jesus was here on earth to show, lead and guide them and today He still doing it for us the beleivers. In other word Jesus came to reinforce and add a new command which is Love that covers the whole commandments.

How did Jesus behave in sharp contrast to how religious leaders acted? The religious leaders were into themselves and putting on a display on their devotion to God, when it really didn't have any true foundation. Jesus on the other hand truly showed how to really worship and love God by embracing and caring for those who needed to be saved and less fortunate.
