What does Jesus mean when He says to take up the Cross and follow Him?

Why does Jesus call "Love One Another" a "New" commandment? The commandment is summing up what was stated in the Ten Commandment. However, Jesus said it was a "new" commandment because He came and died on the Cross as the sacrifical Lamb for our sins thus taking care of all the offerings the Israelites were commanded to do during the times of the Old Testament. Jesus told his disciples that He was the new convenant between the people and the Heavenly Father. The call to love one another as He has loved us is an example that we all need to follow for a simpler life of serving Him. He loved others before Himself, and gave of Himself before thinking about His own needs, wants or desires.
