To repent of sin. From what i have read Jesus and John the baptist were both baptizing at the same time at one point,but John's assignment was completed. Why John the baptist had to die the way he did i don't know, but i am convinced it was part of God's plan.

Why was it necessary for Jesus to increase and John to decrease? We must humble ourselves to the Lord meaning as we decrease, Jesus is exhalted, and honored as our Lord and Savior he deserves all our praise, glory, and honor. To everyone who exhalts himself will be humbled, to him that humbles himself he will be exhalted.
