Why were the chief priests and scribes angry, what was it that Jesus said?

He was saying if they hurt his prophets they also hurt him. He knew what was happening before it happened.

Why were the chief priests and scribes angry, what was it that Jesus said?

The chief priests and scribes were angry because Jesus in parable form was describing what they had done with what God had given them, the responsability of taking care of his people and showing them the right way. when warned by the servants ( prophets) God had sent, they were also treated bad and finally God sent his son whom he loved dearly and they killed him. The were angry and wanted to kill Jesus right then because they just would not believe that Jesus was the one God was telling them about all along! Jesus was predicting his death right in front of them!

Why did Jesus´ penalty for "sin" need to include physical and emotional pain - why not just spiritual separation from God?

He had to completely and fully pay for our sin and curse both from a physical and spiritual aspect. He lifted God's wrath, which is to come, from those who put their trust in Jesus Christ.
