Matthew 13:14 The priests, scribes, and elders spoken of in this lesson did not answer Jesus because they did not know truth. Their hearts were hardened. They did not answer Jesus' question because they did not know the answer. The conversation between them illustrated that they were looking for the safest answer, one that would not contradict them or cause the to get stoned.

Why do you think the priests, scribes, elders did not answer Jesus? They believed in God but I question if they knew he was truly the Son of God. By not having the faith that he was indeed Jesus, the Son of God, they had fear of giving the wrong answer and the fear of worshiping a false God.
